Welcome to Say No To Topical Steroids.
Hello readers! My name is Leslie and I am a victim of Topical Steroid Addiction.
I had childhood eczema and have used topical steroids sporadically to manage my skin condition since I was a kid. My conditions got worse during my early career. In my effort to eat healthier, I have unknowingly ingested dietary allergens (nightshades – through salads, juices etc) and developed severe eczema symptoms. My company doctors prescribed me a slew of moisturizers and topical steroids to treat my condition. I was also referred to specialist dermatologists in the National Skin Centre in Singapore, and was prescribed similar treatments. I was also put on two courses of oral steroids (prednisolone) on separate occasions. My skin was awesome while I was on oral steroids, but once I stopped taking them, my rebound symptoms came back way worse than before. So I was constantly on a repeated cycle of “eczematic” flares and usage of topical steroids to control my conditions.
My skin condition got to the point where I could not physically work, due to the pain as well as the reduced mobility. I was unknowingly suffering from topical steroid withdrawal symptoms, and everytime my skin got bad, I continued to use topical steroids.
In Oct 13, I chanced upon research and data on Topical Steroid Addiction through the Internet. Finally, everything started to make sense. I also came across interesting topics on moisturizer withdrawal through fellow bloggers in the community. Stopping both topical steroids and moisturizers usage, along with my fitness regime, were key factors in my quick recovery.
This blog aims to increase awareness on this iatrogenic disease through the provision of quality lifestyle-centric information on general health and skincare. It is also a collection of my personal thoughts and ideas related to my personal observations and recovery journey. I hope that fellow TSW sufferers can make use of this information for their personal benefit. I hope the public will be more informed on the dangers of topical steroids, so that they will be able to make a conscious choice to “Say No To Topical Steroids”, and look for alternative means to manage their skin conditions.
I welcome you to share the journey of recovery with me.
